my pseudo-career... acting!
So Paul Kloepfer in my ward (aka. "PK") called me last night to recruit me as an extra on the set of an infomercial! So I rounded up a babysitter for Rowan and gathered my potential "wardrobe" (different outfits for my 2 scenes, one being a surprise party, the other a scrapbooking crop party w/laptops) and off I went... the infomercial was being shot for Polaroid's new scrapbooking software at a very nice house in Corona del Mar (luckily I did not have to make that drive to LA). It's going to be a 28 minute program airing late at night on national networks as well as Saturday mornings... quite an experience complete with hair, makeup, and wardrobe. At one point I had all 3 working on me at once! Hairspray going everywhere, wardrobe sewing up a tiny hole in the sweater i was wearing (not mine), and makeup touching up my face! It was pretty surreal, Imust say - but very fun and interesting. It's amazing how much work goes into a production like that, the equipment alone is crazy. We shot the first scene with a director shouting out commands and putting us in the right places, we had several "takes" jumping up and down yelling "surrrrprise" (emphasis on the surr part! apparently that makes it sound more like "surprise" and less like "sooprise"). Also, this business IS as vain as it appears. Remember my finger smash?? Back in June, I smashed my wedding ring finger in a metal expandable shelf (thought I broke it, worst pain ever). Well, it turned all sorts of colors and finally decided to fall off! So now I have half a nail left. I was telling the hair lady about it and she must have told the director because in our "crop party" scene, the director yells out "who lost the nail?" I timidly raised my hand... she says "oh you can't sit there, you have to move. we can't have that nail in the shot." I mean, I neatly manicured all my other fingers!!! But this shot had to have perfect fingers in it... you know, for typing on our pseudo-laptops laughing about how fun it is to scrapbook on our computers. So, I guess I can see why, no one would want to see that yucky finger... but wow, talk about feeling self-conscious!! The whole thing was such a funny experience and worth every penny of that $150 i got paid to do it! Maybe I'm feeling a side career coming on... hello, hollywood! Or maybe not, I need to remember my past acting jobs... very bad, very very bad. I'm a terrible actress. I was "Belle" in Beauty & the Beast in high school and our director kept telling me "you have to be Belle, you have to think about her every day". I was like, no.. I'm actually not Belle, I'm Kristy and I'm not kissing Adam Cromwell (the beast). I let Mark watch the video my parents took of my performance and he confirmed that he was not watching Belle, he was indeed watching a young Kristy trying to avoid a kiss from her classmate Adam. (Yes, he tried to kiss me onstage at the end, me in the yellow princess dress and everything and I gave him the shut-out!! ON STAGE! So embarrassing... although I do remember thinking that the embarrassment that would come from that kiss was far worse than how it looked when Belle tried to diss the Beast... that poor Beast.) And, please don't ask to see this video. It's on a VHS tape so you probably can't find a VHS player to view it anyway and it's locked away with my cheerleading and beauty pageant videos. All of which are hilarious and locked away where they belong... oh the life of a teen growing up in Idaho in the 90's...
